Zaffirini sacrifices bill in order to keep concealed weapons out of universities

(KERA) - State legislation allowing concealed handguns in public university classrooms and dormitories has stalled again and is threatening the passage of another higher education measure as KERA's Shelley Kofler reports.

When Republican Senator Jeff Wentworth of San Antonio didn't have enough votes to bring his concealed gun bill to the floor he tried to attach it to a bill that would give universities greater flexibility in dealing with budget cuts.

But before a vote could be taken on the education bill with the concealed handgun provision attached, the author of the bill Senator Judith Zaffirini tabled it. The Laredo Democrat says she'll let it die if that stops the gun amendment.

It's now unclear whether and how Wentworth will revive his effort to allow concealed weapons at universities.
